King of Spirits
This releases brief “Walking and Talking” encouraged the Front Page team to get away from their desks, venture outside, and connect with one another. Designers Kath Oakley and Mark Waters met the request in fantastic style.
A walk around Ubud in Bali inspired this collaboration between Mark Waters and Kath Oakley. Collected photographs form a structure into which other textural elements encountered along the way reveal themselves; from the texture of jackfruit, the intricate carving of Barong – King of the Spirits – to the checkered pattern of the Saput Poleng which symbolizes mutual dualism and the balance of the universe. The three layers of the print refer to the three spiritual layers of Balinese Hinduism and the distortion experienced in practising trance.
The SoundCloud track “King of Spirits” is a collection of field recordings that Mark and Kath put together to accompany their piece. Tune in for the whole mix and allow yourself to be transported across the true depth to this multi-layered print.
